The food are excellent - taste and presentation. But the utensils are not that clean. The wAiter who served us was chewing something while taking our orders and noticed his uniform was dirty too. And did not say thank you when we gave him the tip. Will not come back because of the service and sanitation issue.

Hunan Spring has been my family's go-to Chinese restaurant for 20-plus years. There have been off nights, and there tends to be a crowd on weekends, but more times than not, it has made for an enjoyable meal. The expansive menu includes Cantonese and Sichuan dishes, venerable classics and inventive chef's specials. By habit, I start with cold noodles in sesame sauce: they rarely disappoint. Other favorites include jade duck, crispy tender steak, and almost anything in garlic or XO sauce. One caveat: don't expect a lot of heat, even if you ask for something spicy. While prices are substantially higher than takeout Chinese, the quality of the food is also substantially better. Service here comes across as harried at times but is usually very efficient.Having relocated to a relative wasteland for quality Chinese food, I tend to get nostalgic (and hungry) thinking about Hunan. However, it can hold its own even in cosmopolitan New Jersey.

I went there today for lunch and had a really good meal. I ordered sweet and sour chicken my husband ordered chicken and fresh mushrooms in brown sauce. I was a little upset because his meal was better than mine. Overall the place is really nice it was clean and the food was pretty good. The only downside was that the hostess was falling asleep in the middle of her shift and really didn't pay much attention to us. I'll go back again and give the place another try.

I seriously don't get what everybody is talking about here! Ok, I will admit that the service might have gone downhill a little bit, (might be different for some other people) but for me it is not really that noticeable. I really don't get what one person was saying about Hunan Spring being busy during Christmas! OF COURSE ITS BUSY! Almost all restaurants are busy during Christmas, I can't really blame Hunan Spring for slow take outs during Christmas, because when I arrived there to pick up my order, it was FLOODED with people. Another reviewer also complained that on Christmas the man at the front counter had to take other orders too! (Ok, fine I understand how your patience can run out after and hour and a half of waiting but still) You still have to see the bigger picture! The place is flooded with people, so naturally people would have to be more efficient. The food quality is great! The new owner has just added a really nice desert (fried ice cream) which I really like. The owner has also added many new foods and drinks, etc, which all are really great!. Another reviewer talked about how Hunan Spring is and American Chinese restaurant. Well of course its 'Americanized'! We are in America, Chinese tastes of food won't suit the American taste. Thats what most Italian restaurants are doing too! Thats a stupid excuse to give this to give it a one star review! Anyways, my favorite dishes are Pecking Duck (delicious), I still like it very much. There scallion pancakes are also very nice. I also love their Giao Yan Calamari. Their soups are also very good, my favorite is their Won Ton soup and their Egg drop soup. They also have a Satay Prawns dish which is delicious! I also like their fried rice! Its great!(I have been coming to here for a really long time) :)

Hunan Spring is consistent, good-quality chinese food. What more can you ask for?Their fried rice is PERFECT; it's got pieces of egg, fresh scallions and most importantly: it's actually been pan fried! Their General Tso's is unique in that it's not some odd, artificial color and the pieces of chicken actually look/taste like real chicken and don't make me wonder what I'm eating as I chew my food. (As most chinese food does.)They have a decently furnished restaurant space that is generally well-filled on most nights and busy during weekends. It's always a good sign when people aren't afraid to eat AT a chinese restaurant. Even though entrees are a dollar or two more expensive here than at most chinese places, the quality and reliability of this place is well worth it.Only downside? They don't deliver.

I love this place . It's not ur run of the mill Chinese. There is a wide variety of dishes to choose from including a diet section for the health conscience. The soups are wonderful and light even the fried noodles on the table to put in your soup tasted fresh not stale like most take out and eat in restaurants. From the scallion pancakes to the crispy duck dish, we ordered was uniquely prepared to order and outstanding . White rice comes on the table but if you prefer brown rice like I do just ask and they will bring you some for a small fee. A pretty plate of arranged oranges and fortune cookies come after the meal to help clean the pallet . The decor is very simple nothing to right home about.( Very typical for a Chinese restaurant. The service could be a little better overall. It wasn't busy so I thought it was a bit slow otherwise I would probably have given them 5 stars! but i'll hold off until i go back again and see how they do.

Absolutely awful. I made an account just to review this place. We ordered food from here on Christmas. They told us it would take approximately 20 minutes to pick up the food. We were a bit surprised, considering it was Christmas and Chinese food restaurants are busy.We should have known. After an hour and a HALF of waiting for food in an entryway so crowded you literally couldn't move, we were given our order by the completely unapologetic and belligerent man behind the counter. He refused to discount us at all and instead offered up a "cold noodle" appetizer. He was so incredibly rude, he even took more orders IN THE MIDDLE OF SPEAKING TO US. By the way, he continued to tell the phone orders the wait was 25 minutes. I have no problem waiting an hour and a half for food if I am told that will be the wait. The only thing he had to gain from blatantly lying about wait time was $$$. Hope it was worth it to lose a customer.

EDITED 11/19/2012!I have frequented this place dozens of times in the past and hadn't been there in a while.. decided to go last night with my parents. Have things changed! For one, the prices have gone up significantly and the portions down considerably. Gave us two tiny ice cream bowls of white rice for three people two of which ordered $30 entrees (Do you know how cheap white rice is?! Like seriously..) Also, I never remember this place being a $30+ per person (Without wine!) type of place.. very disappointed by the value. The service is now terrible. Our waiter literally handed my father a hot plate of Peking Duck and walked away, we had to call after him to help us move some plates around.I remember with the old owners had your waiter literally filling up your water as you drank it. All the Zagat reviews and news articles raving about this place are during their ownership (check it out!)The food was tasty and tasted fresh however. Portions were OK. If anything may return for lunch specials/take out if it was discounted. However, the environment was lacking for a dinner setting. Check out Cathays for fine chinese dining at a more reasonable and friendly establishment (owners always come over and talk to tables)

Wow! This place was great. I'm glad I listened to the yelp reviews. We put in an order on Saturday night and it was ready in 10 minutes for pick-up. AMAZING. Very reasonable prices. Wonton soup was excellent - not too salty, hearty and lots of dumplings. Only disappoint was the cold noodles appetizer - very bland and a little bitter. Expected them to be sweeter.Lots of crispy noodles that were delicious. Chicken and broccoli was great. Sweet and sour chicken was excellent. We only had 2 fortune cookies for a party of three which was a little bit of a bummer (I guess they went by how many entrees we ordered.) All in all, though, we really enjoyed our meal and will definitely be back! Some of the best chinese I've had in the tri-state area.

4 and a half stars? REALLY?I mean, REALLYyyyy???If this is, as one reviewer said, "Absolutely the best Chinese food in the area", then we are in trouble.Just moved into town 2 weeks ago. Based on my realtor's recommendation and on the decent reviews, a friend and I decided to give this place a shot. Big mistake. We ordered soup and 3 dishes, every dish was blah, the only thing that was average was the soup.I would not call this a Chinese Restaurant, it's an AMERICAN Chinese Restaurant.Big difference.I don't understand why restaurant owners cannot keep things authentic. Is it really that bad for business to stick to the real stuff? Do Asian restaurants really have to change things to cater to the American palette in order to survive / thirve?I guess next time I want real authentic Chinese Food I'll head over to Manhattan or Flushing. Or cook.Sigh.

This is an average americanized chinese restaurant. While the staff is friendly and attentive and the menu is extensive, the food is not authentically chinese. I am disappointed with all 3 dishes (string beans, beef with xo sauce, sizzling sea bass), but was pleased with the soup (crab meat with winter melon). No plans to return, I will drive to NYC instead.

I have been going to Hunan Spring for years..The best Chinese Food in the area! It always used to be a tie between China House in Union (I so miss them best Chow Mein and Wonton Soup) or Hunan Spring in terms of who had the best food in Union County ..sadly China House is many years gone and Hunan takes the gold medal. Wonton Soup is awesome. Buddahs Delight and vegetable dumplings are great too. Great for takeout but I love dining in here too..they give you a refillable bowl of crispy noodles and sauce to start your dining experience.

Let me start with saying, I'm not a big fan of what we in the Western world call Chinese kitchen. Usually it is with a lot of fat and with frozen ingredients. I wasn't too thrilled when my friend suggested to go for Chinese, but hey he loves it, it is close to home and even more so, I'm always open for something new, so maybe this would be that refreshing new thing I needed for this night.I was surprised and stunned. Plenty of parking, friendly greeted at the entrance, also the rest of the staff was friendly, and way too many choices on the menu. I have a dietary restriction that is not always easy to go with but I already saw there were plenty of choices but my first choice might have had ingredients I couldn't have. After a funny but confusing talk with the waiter I wasn't sure what was going to happen, but he knew my first up to third choice for each course (starter & main) he knew my restrictions toward some ingredients, so fingers crossed and hoping for the best. Soon he came back telling me that both my first choices were possible annd that since the standard sauce for the main contained gluten (one of my restictions) they changed it to accomodate me and for the soup with a little modification it also worked! A relief to realize the waiter understood it all along and even more so that the cook would, too.The food arrived fast, the ingredients looked very fresh and the sauces were not as fat and sugary as in most Chinese places I've been before. The tast palet was unusual but in a very good way. They sold me, I'll be back again and maybe will try Chinese more often. Normally this all would be getting 4 starts from me, but knowing that they would only not get the 5th star because I really am not a huge fan of Chinese food wouldn't be fair: it is the best Chinese food I have had in over 5 yesrs, that's worth 5 starts!Only disadvantage, even though I had a portion of food wrapped for the next day's lunch, there was still no room for desert! Next time no starter for me (but I'm not a huge eater, so typical American apetites can handle 3 courses!

Hunan who? Hunan what??? I don't even live around here but I eat here, ok? I die for Orange Chicken. I know that it is a fairly common and almost Americanized dish at this point, but I look for the real deal authentic Asian taste. You know that sweet and spicy gingery goodness.....I need the orange sauce to be slightly on the red side. I need for the sauce to have light and almost gooey consistency... NEED ok? Lock it down baby! They got it. The chicken pieces are breast meat and it is crispy. Real crispy. I am also very picky when it comes to rice of any kind. My mother is Puerto Rican so I grew up and continue to practically live on rice. If it aint cooked right it could ruin a meal! So, normally when I eat out I try to avoid rice and go with either a soup, potato, or pasta-whatever the dish calls for-just not rice. But at Hunan I wouldn't have anything else with my meal. I get the pork fried and white. I love to mix that up with the orange sauce.I used to hang out with a girl that lives in Springfield, haven't for about 10 years. I do clearly remember though that they did not deliver at least back then. I am curious as to whether or not they do. I live in E-town so ordering isn't an option for me anyway. I enjoy eating there and when am in the area I will often call and pickup lunch before I go back home. The re-heat factor is tight too. Next day it still tastes good. In my dreams I see Hunan as a 24/7 delivering throughout Union County Chinese Restaurant. I may just never leave my house!

Absolutely the best Chinese food in the area. We can't resist visiting Hunan Spring for dine-in or takeout at least every other week or so.For starters, do yourself a favor and try their soups. The hot and sour soup is really the best in the area, with bright fresh flavors, loads of ingredients, and a tasty balance of tartness and heat. When it's available I also like the crab and wintermelon soup. It's mildly flavored in a delicate white egg-drop broth, with juicy little pieces of melon and shreds of flavorful crab. For a bracingly piquant treat, ask for the "Crazy Beef". This is a delicious, authentic Sichuan dish for those who like it hot. Melt-in-your-mouth tender slices of beef are combined with flavorful, fresh sauteed vegetables and surrounded in a fiery, savory sauce with a great quantity of red chiles and Sichuan peppercorns. The spice from the chiles combines beautifully with the tongue-tingling Sichuan peppercorns. Definitely gives your tastebuds a workout! Crazy Fish is also available, with tender, flaky white fish in the same preparation. I almost always order one of these dishes each time I visit Hunan Spring. Simply delicious.I'm also a big fan of the vegetarian silver noodles, which are glassy transparent noodles in a light red curry broth with tofu and an ample helping of vegetables. For special occasions, bring a group and get the Peking Duck. The duck is marvelously crispy and is rolled expertly into pancakes tableside, with crisp vegetables and savory sauce.Portion sizes are excellent for dine-in or takeout. Service is very attentive and friendly. Hunan Spring simply cannot be beat!
